LIGHT FIXTURES THAT BRIGHTEN YOUR
ROOM AND BOLSTER DESIGN

By Sarah Lyon

A house isn’t a home without some mood lighting! Sometimes, you just want to relax in your space without the harshness of an overhead light. However, determining which types of light fixtures to introduce into your home can be tricky, given that there are so many options and styles from which to choose. So we asked the pros to weigh in with their go-to light fixture suggestions!

Use sconce light fixtures to brighten up the bedside

Jazz up your bedside—or even a living room corner—with one or two sconce light fixtures

“Sconces act as functional art,” says Ellie Mroz of Ellie Mroz Design. “They are beautiful, can be sculptural, and serve a purpose as well.”

Mary Kathryn Wells of Mary Kathryn Wells Interior Design agrees: “I love sconces both as an opportunity to create some visual interest on the walls without having to buy pricey art while offering a practical light source,” she explains. “They’re a bit of a two-for-one in that regard of adding both style as well as a practical purpose.”

Sconces pair wonderfully with overhead light fixtures, floor lamps, and more.

“The addition of sconce light fixtures creates layered lighting, which is always preferable in a space, and makes a home feel custom,” Mroz adds. “They can turn a regular corner into a full-on moment and destination for book reading, coffee drinking, or snuggling!”

Sconces can also add an unexpected touch to a space.

“Table lamps are commonplace for the bedside, but sometimes I like to go for a wall sconce light fixture placed above a nightstand to free up surface space,” says Timala Stewart of Decurated Interiors. “Keep a carafe nearby to quench the late-night thirst and opt for a reed diffuser for a bit of aromatic decor.”

Rashida Banks of Rashida Banks Home & Lifestyle is partial to sconces but is also a proponent of table lamps and floor lamp light fixtures.

“I love experiencing spaces in the evening,” she says. “These secondary lighting sources create a calm and sultry atmosphere.”

And there’s no need for your light fixtures to be boring.

“My favorite light fixtures always have to have a certain sculptural presence, whether I am creating drama in what would otherwise be a forgotten corner, or I need to invoke peacefulness and calm for a bedroom,” says Amy May of Artala Designs

Say goodbye to that builder-grade lighting fixture and hang up an overhead light fixture that truly reflects your aesthetic.

“Swapping out those overhead light fixtures for something more unique and with personality and punchiness makes a huge difference in the feel of a space,” Wells notes. If you’re renting, just make sure to keep the original fixtures on hand so that you can re-install them prior to moving out.

Think big with a chandelier that stuns. “We love to add a conversation starter chandelier that says ‘welcome in’ to a space,” says Chanda Kea of Kea Interiors. “Its presence can invoke luxury, sophistication and an ambience for entertaining and relaxation.”

The right light fixtures will make your space feel more livable and welcoming in no time. Best of all, these are forever items that you’ll be able to relocate from room to room and home to home as often as you please!
